چکیده

Mesospheric water vapour measurements taken by the SMR instrument onboard the Odin satellite between 2002 and 2006 have been analysed with focus on the meso-spheric semi-annual circulation in the tropical and subtropical region. This analysis provides the first complete picture of mesospheric SAO in water vapour, covering alti-5 tudes above 80 km where the only previous study based on UARS/HALOE data was limited. Our analysis shows a clear semi-annual variation in the water vapour distribution in the entire altitude range between 65 km and 100 km in the equatorial area. Maxima occur near the equinoxes below 75 km and around the solstices above 80 km. The phase reversal occurs in the small layer in-between, consistent with the downward 10 propagation of the mesospheric SAO in the zonal wind in this altitude range. The SAO amplitude exhibits a double peak structure, with maxima at about 75 km and 81 km. The observed amplitudes show higher values than the UARS/HALOE amplitudes. The upper peak amplitude remains relatively constant with latitude. The lower peak amplitude decreases towards higher latitudes, but recovers in the Southern Hemisphere 15 subtropics. On the other hand, the annual variation is much more prominent in the northern hemispheric subtropics. Furthermore, higher volume mixing ratios during summer and lower values during winter are observed in the Northern Hemisphere sub-tropics, as compared to the corresponding latitude range in the Southern Hemisphere.

Noctilucent clouds and the mesospheric water vapour: the past decade

The topic of this paper is the sensitivity of the brightness of noctilucent clouds (NLC) on the ambient water vapour mixing ratio f(H2O). Firstly, we use state-of-the-art models of NLC layer formation to predict NLC brightness changes in response to changes in the 80 km mixing ratio f(H2O) for the two cases of ground-based 532 nm lidar observations at 69 N and for hemispheric satellite SBUV obs...

Wintertime water vapor in the polar upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere: First satellite observations by Odin submillimeter radiometer

[1] In this paper we present Odin submillimeter radiometer (Odin/SMR) water vapor measurements in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere with focus on the polar latitudes in winter. Measurements since 2003 have been compiled to provide a first overview of the water vapor distribution in this altitude range. Our observations show a distinct seasonal increase of the water vapor concentration...

Noctilucent clouds and the mesospheric water vapour

The topic of this paper is the expected (from modelling) and observed sensitivity of the brightness β of noctilucent clouds (NLC) on the ambient water vapour mixing ratio f (H 2 O). Firstly, we show that state-of-the-art models of NLC layer formation predict that in the Arctic summer, a 10% increase of f (H 2 O) in the upper mesosphere should 5 lead to a 22% increase in β. Secondly, we review o...

First Odin sub-mm cloud ice retrieval

There exists today no established satellite technique for measuring the amount of ice in thicker clouds. Sub-mm radiometry is a promising technique for the task, and a retrieval scheme for the first such instrument in space, Odin-SMR, is presented. Several advantages of sub-mm observations are confirmed, such as low influence of parti-5 cle shape and orientation, and a high dynamic range of the...

Diurnal variation of stratospheric and lower mesospheric HOCl, ClO and HO2 at the equator: comparison of 1-D model calculations with measurements by satellite instruments

The diurnal variation of HOCl and the related species ClO, HO2 and HCl measured by satellites has been compared with the results of a one-dimensional photochemical model. The study compares the data from various limbviewing instruments with model simulations from the middle stratosphere to the lower mesosphere. Data from three submillimetre instruments and two infrared spectrometers are used, n...
